LONDON — A British man has been arrested for selling drugs without a prescription to help the world’s biggest drugmaker.
Pfizer, the world’s biggest pharmaceutical firm, said it has arrested a man who is currently jailed for up to 20 years for selling drugs without prescription, after it received US approval for selling the anti-impotence drug Viagra, also known as sildenafil.
Pfizer said: “LONDON has arrested the man for selling the ‘Sildenafil’ product in the United States, which is for sale on the internet.
“The man was seized by the UK customs and is currently under arrest.
“He is currently under arrest in the UK.
“The British man has been detained for up to 20 years,” the UK government said in a statement.
A man was arrested in March last year and is currently under court orders to pay a £20 million fine and pay a further £500,000 in damages.
The man, from Leicester, was arrested in Bristol on Saturday in connection with a number of illegal purchases of Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs.
He has already pleaded guilty to three counts of illegally selling the erectile dysfunction drug without prescription and two counts of smuggling in counterfeit and fake drugs.
He was released on bail on Monday after a short trial, having been advised of his guilt.
The case has been the subject of a number of investigations, including one involving the online pharmacy www.thecialist.com.
He was the second man to be jailed for a similar offence after Peter Jackson, who was arrested by US police last month.
The first was John Smith, who was released in January last year for selling counterfeit Viagra in Manchester.
The US customs office said it had received intelligence on a number of illegal purchases of Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs.
According to court documents, Smith was also in possession of Viagra after being told by a pharmacist that his prescription was for Viagra.
“Smith bought the drug on the internet, using a ‘online pharmacy’ account,” the case said.
It added that the drug was “purchased” with a prescription from a pharmacy.
“The pharmacist told the pharmacist that Viagra was for sale on the internet,” the case said.
